Inter School Environmental Public Speaking Competition:
The Inter School Environmental Public Speaking Competition (ISEPSC) aims to stress the importance of the youth as they hold all the ideas, innovation and are eventually the ones to make a difference for the generations to come. This year marked the 17th cycle of holding this annual competition which was held on the 25th and 26th of April 2017. EEG has come a long way from 2001 and managed to transform this programme into one of the biggest environmental events in the UAE.
Over the course of two days, the students were given a platform to freely speak their minds through a structured process, to showcase their leadership abilities and be part of a bigger picture which is, to create and unite young environmental advocates from all over the UAE. Prestigious and esteemed judges with well-established environmental backgrounds were invited to give their valuable input and determine the winners for each category.
Topics for the competition were predetermined and derived from the sustainable development goals announced in 2015. This year the Sub-senior Category competed in the topics ‘People and Planet: Finding a Sustainable Balance’ and ‘Quality Education: Roadmap to Sustainable Development’. The Senior Category competed in the topics ‘Future of Power’ and ‘Sustainable Food Systems: Understanding Food Security’.

CAN COLLECTION CAMPAIGN
The first recycling initiative by EEG, the Can Collection Campaign, was started during the year 1997.
Under the campaign, EEG has launched 3 special projects:
Can Collection Day – Last Thursday of February
Your Can for a Tree – April – June
Can Collection Drive – Second Saturday of October
Type of Waste Targeted: Aluminum beverage cans
In 2016, EEG was able to collect 27,372 kg of Aluminium Cans, resulting in the mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the equivalent of 410.85 metric tons of CO2. A total of 664 m3 of landfi ll space has also been saved due to these efforts.
Can Collection Day 2017
EEG is delighted to launch the 20th cycle of the Can Collection Campaign with the Can Collection Day on 23rd February 2017 and the Can Collection Drive on 28th October 2017. Registration is now open for the Can Collection Day. Our target for 2017 is 28,000kg of Cans so join the campaign and help us achieve the target.

PAPER COLLECTION CAMPAIGN
Paper is one of the widely recycled materials in the world. Collection and storage of paper is easy as it is dry and clean. Recycling paper saves trees, water and energy and helps reduce waste going to landfill. The Paper Collection Campaign was started in 2001.
Type of Waste Targeted: All kinds of paper – newspapers, books, cardboard etc.

PLASTIC COLLECTION CAMPAIGN
oday, everywhere we look, we are surrounded by plastics in some form or another. A normal plastic bottle takes thousands of years to decay if discarded in the environment. Statistics show that each UAE resident uses an average of 450 plastic water bottles each year.
Recycling plastic reduces the amount of oil required to produce more plastic and takes a bulky non-biodegradable materials out of the landfill sites. EEG started this campaign in 2005.
Type of Waste Targeted: All types of domestic plastic.

GLASS COLLECTION CAMPAIGN
Glass is a 100% recyclable material. Glass takes thousands of years to break down as it does not decay with time. Glass recycling is encouraged because it saves natural resources like sand and limestone and reduces air pollution. EEG started Glass Collection Campaign in 2005.
Type of Waste Targeted: Soft drink, ketchup/mayonnaise bottles, medicine bottles, perfume bottles single layer (thin) flat glass, juice and water containers

TONER COLLECTION CAMPAIGN
Toners contain toxic metals, which if discarded improperly, can lead to groundwater contamination through seepage and soil toxification. Recycling is the appropriate way to deal with them.
EEG started the Toner Collection Campaign in 2001 when the extensive use of printers had just started.
Type of Waste Targeted: Toner and Ink Cartridges

BEVERAGE CARTON COLLECTION CAMPAIGN
Beverage cartons provide an air and water tight packaging to food and liquids. There is a huge consumption of beverage cartons in the UAE. Recognizing the need of beverage carton recycling, EEG launched Beverage Carton Recycling Campaign in 2010.
Type of Waste Targeted: Juice Cartons, Milk Cartons etc.

BATTERY COLLECTION CAMPAIGN
Proper disposal of batteries is extremely important as they contain heavy metals which pollute soil and groundwater. In some parts of the world, disposing of batteries in the trash is illegal. EEG recognized the need of adding batteries to the waste management projects portfolio and started Battery Collection campaign in 2006.
Type of Waste Targeted: Alkaline batteries used for hand tools, cameras, flashlights, toys and other items such as portable source of power, mobile phone batteries and car batteries

MOBILE PHONE COLLECTION CAMPAIGN
UAE residents toss thousands of cell phones each year in favour of newer technology. All these discarded phones remain unattended to and can harm the environment. In 2009, EEG launched the recycling of mobile phones to ensure a sustainable use of natural resources and to reduce pollution.
The information is propagated through Dialogue Sessions with school students and employees of companies year round.
Type of Waste Targeted: Mobile phones and accessories

ANNUAL AWARDING CEREMONY
EEG’s Annual Awarding Ceremony is a day set aside for honoring the efforts of our individual, corporate and educational institute members who have contributed significantly to save the environment via recycling activities hosted by EEG throughout the year. The Ceremony is hosted each year in conjunction with the World Environment Day.

TEACHERS’ WORKSHOP SERIES
‘TEACHING THE TEACHERS’ is never underestimated because it is through these specially trained professionals that students gain knowledge and power to make informed decisions about the environment. Since 2001, EEG has been closely working with teachers all over the UAE to help enhance the education experience that children receive.
The Annual Teachers’ Workshop covers relevant and current environmental issues and urges teachers to incorporate these issues into their subjects.

STUDENTS’ WORKSHOP
Workshops are the platforms where information is exchanged and a spectrum of different perspectives is seen.
EEG holds Students’ Workshop to motivate students to enhance the overall quality of the environment and guide them towards responsible, ethical and pro-environmental behavior. Held in November each year The Students’ Workshop is an event where participants from schools and colleges across UAE discover, discuss and decide about challenges and solutions of the current environmental situation.
The 16th Annual Students Workshop was held from the 7th – 10th November under the theme of “Sustainable Innovation – Road to Sustainable Development Goals”. The school level workshops were held at Rashid School for Boys and the University level workshop was held at the Time Grand Plaza Hotel, Dubai. A total of 697 students and teachers from 105 schools and universities across the UAE participated in this four day workshop, the highest participants ever for this event. EEG conducted the workshop keeping its commitment towards the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in mind.
The workshop witnessed the presence of expert speakers from the corporate and educational sector who presented the students and the teachers with key knowledge on various concepts so as to expose them to the challenges faced by the county, region and the world today and stimulated them to the idea of working together for sustainable living. The experts also shared some innovative solutions adopted by the organisations to meet the target SDG’s.

FOR OUR EMIRATES WE PLANT
‘The first of its kind in the UAE and the most innovative of EEG’s Projects, the “For Our Emirates We Plant” sees an integration of our diverse Waste Management Campaigns with Tree Planting Initiatives. The idea of the project is to provide a platform to the community to recycle their wastes and in light of their efforts plant a tree under the entity’s (company, academic institution or family) name in one of the Emirates in the UAE.
EEG combined its various Tree Planting Initiatives under the umbrella of the “For Our Emirates – We Plant”. This project has four spokes under its belt: The “Your Can for a Tree” initiative, the “Neighborhood Recycling Project”, the “One Root One Communi-Tree” project and the “Together We Plant” initiative.
The four campaigns form a seamless integration between EEG’s Waste Management Programmes and Tree Planting Initiatives.

Neighborhood Recycling Project
Aimed to engage the student community during the summer months, the Neighborhood Recycling Project engages EEG student members to run small awareness and collection initiatives in their own communities involving a minimum of 20 families. The Project has been active since 2011 with a growing response every year. In 2016, the initiative resulted in GHG reductions of 200 MTCO2E and 1,261 Million BTU of energy savings. A total of 125 trees were planted under the initiative.
Project Duration: June – September
together we plant
As the number of organizations, educational institutions and individuals’ interest to protect and preserve trees and the environment is becoming more apparent, EEG continues its endeavor to increase the sustainable green urban spaces through its numerous environmental and tree planting initiatives. Taking into consideration the importance of trees in the environment, planting trees is one of the easiest and most effective ways to exhibit the global concern towards environmental protection. Such Tree Planting initiatives are of vital significance in educating the youth about the importance of trees and the various benefits which trees provide. Furthermore, throughout each tree’s life span, a certain amount of CO2 is mitigated. The accumulative number of trees planted until the end of 2016 is 2,094,583, thus the accumulative CO2 mitigated from all the above mentioned programs is 12,351 MTCO2E

CHAIRPERSON’S NOTE
‘Together for a better environment’.. is the core idea around which all of our pro-environmental activities are woven. It is the common thread that brings educational institutions, private companies, government organizations and community together to contribute to the betterment of our environment. Emirates Environmental Group is a means to get closer to the environment by engaging into its innovative programmes.
I entered into the environment awareness field in late 1980s, with an inner calling to create and establish a system for a whole new generation of environmentalists. EEG CHAIRPERSON’S NOTE Ramadan Kareem
The UAE’s President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared 2017 as the Year of Giving. On this occasion, Emirates Environmental Group dedicated itself to making a difference in the society, working towards the benefit of the environment and helping to meet critical global environmental issues. ‘Giving’ is easy and abundant.
Every individual has the capability and capacity to make a real difference by giving back to the society and the planet.
We at EEG work tirelessly and effectively, to provide the local community with numerous platforms and initiatives, such as our waste management and educational programmes, tree planting and clean up campaigns, through which they can give back to our environment. Today, EEG’s Waste Management Programme is strongly grounded as one of the most effective pillars, which positively contributes to the environment and sustainability in the UAE. Offering a wide range of impactful campaignsand drives targeting six recyclable materials, EEG engages all sectors of the society in responsible practices, by encouraging corporate and academic entities, individuals and students to adopt sustainable practices and to reduce, reuse and recycle. EEG’s Educational Programmes combine the benefits of learning and capacity building to develop the skills and awareness of the young generation, which serve as pre-requisites for creating a sustainability conscious citizenry. We at EEG further recognise volunteerism as another way to give back to society. We encourage the community to unite and collaborate in our campaigns by volunteering their time and energy for the betterment of the environment. Emirates Environmental Group opened doors for volunteering
opportunities and embedded the virtue of volunteerism in the younger generation, raising a committed and responsible future generation. Over 11,000 volunteers were actively involved in EEG’s Clean Up UAE 2017 throughout the year, creating a huge social impact and reducing the pressure of waste on our precious environment.
Here at EEG, we further created new successful and valuable partnerships this year with global civil society bodies, corporate and academic entities and government bodies, to facilitate their involvement in environmental action and to encourage anyone who wishes to make a positive impact on our country. Being strong believers in the Sustainable Development Goal No. 17 on the value of partnerships, EEG continues to create networks with local, regional and global entities. This year, Emirates Environmental Group as an accredited organisation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), joined leaders, cientists, policy makers and environmental enthusiasts of the world under the movement, “Towards a Pollution Free Planet”. We are at the forefront of addressing the most current themes in the environmental sector at both national and international levels and we strive to align our initiatives with these themes. By implementing the mandate of #BeatPollution, EEG not only strengthened its partnership with UNEP, but also encouraged its members and stakeholders to be conscious of their behaviour and consumption patterns. I thank the leadership of our beautiful country for giving us such a conducive and secure environment that motivates us to give back, grow, innovate and excel. Dear EEG Members, volunteers and supporting entities, we thank you all for your continued involvement and support. This Annual Report of 2017 is a testament of our collective achievements and hard work. Your exceptional contribution to these achievements is valuable and I hope that this report inspires and motivates you to approach the coming year with greater drive and passion to amplify our positive impact on the society and the environment. The UAE government has declared the year 2018 as “The Year of Zayed”, in 100 years celebration of the founding father’s memory and vision. With his wisdom and goodness, the late H.H. Sheikh Zayed set the foundations of environmental conservation and sustainable development in the country, while preserving the social and cultural heritage so precious to his vision. As we look forward to the New Year, we wish for goodness and happiness for all. Let us heighten our successes in 2018, honouring and continuing the late H.H. Sheikh Zayed’s legacy of environmental stewardship, one where the principles of Giving are deeply implanted in the hearts of many more generations to come.

TEACHERS WORKSHOP 2014
The 2014, Teachers’ Workshop was based on Sustainability: The way forward.
The main objective of the workshop is to build the capacity of teachers regarding environmental issues in order for them to then pass this knowledge on to their students, schools and communities.
We want to give you the resources to change the manner in which your institution is run; to help it grow and move forward sustainably.
The specific objectives of this year’s Workshop are:
To deepen understanding on the concept of our role in the future of sustainability
To elucidate the concept of individual sustainable living and underscore its global importance and relevance
To increase awareness of key challenges brought about by climate change and water security crisis
To provide participants with practical eco-friendly knowledge and relevant skills that they can apply to their curriculums and everyday lives

It is our strong belief that reaching out to the youth base of the country will play an important role in the future of sustainability in the region. Educational Institutions being the incubators of future leaders who will lead the global economic growth, our teachers perform a core function to holistically and spiritually gear the youth to deal with what the future has in store for them. The youth should aim to become whole human beings by showing compassion and consideration towards the society and the environment in all their undertakings.
Towards this end, EEG participates in many campus outreach programmes every year to impart the idea of sustainability and environmentalism among students – be it in the form of giving a presentation, being a part of an exhibition or inviting school/university students to the EEG Office.

Your Can For a Tree
Launched during the year 2012 to provide a boost to Aluminum Recycling in the UAE, the initiative provides the platform to companies, academic institutions and families to plant an indigenous tree under their name once reaching the targets set out for the project. A total of 17,080 participants were engaged by 177 student members who held this campaign and managed to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions of 293 MTCO2E, save 2,218 trees and 371 cubic meters of landfill space.
Project Duration: April – June

One Root One Communi-Tree
One Root One Communi-Tree
The project stresses on the importance of recycling all types of waste and on the increasing the sustainable green patch. With participation from the community; public and private organizations, educational institutions and families, different targets are set for different groups and categories. With the support of 12,415 participating entities the campaign resulted in the mitigation of 685 MTCO2E of GHGs, saving 3,509 trees from being felled and saving 1,047 cubic meters of landfill space.
Project Duration: July - November

Neighborhood Recycling Project
Aimed to engage the student community during the summer months, the Neighborhood Recycling Project engages EEG student members to run small awareness and collection initiatives in their own communities involving a minimum of 20 families. The Project has been active for the last five years with a growing response every year. In 2014, the initiative resulted in GHG reductions of 81.5 MTCO2E and 1235.8 Million BTU of energy savings. A total of 18 trees were planted under the initiative.
The accumulative number of trees planted until the 30th of April 2015 is 2,093,227, thus the accumulative CO2 mitigated from all the above mentioned programs is 17,789 MTCO2E

For the year 2014, EEG carried out tree planting in the Emirates of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and UAQ. In 2015 the rest of the Emirates were covered which included Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, ABU Dhabi.
At each school the planting was concluded by a ceremony which was well received by the management of the selected schools and the students as well as the members of the McDonald’s UAE management who all helped plant 50 indigenous trees at each respective school and became a part of the green movement. The 350 trees planted during this initiative will mitigate 3.09 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions upon maturity.

"Clean UP UAE 2016 will be the 15th edition of the campaign that initially started on December 12, 2002 involving four (4) Emirates - Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi. Through the years, this national campaign has grown exponentially in scope and reach to embrace even some of the remotest corners of the UAE. Due to the vast popularity and a high level of support from government and private organizations, EEG went on to organize the campaign in all the seven (7) Emirates since 2005. Gradually the event was expanded to include a slew of activities such as tree planting, competitions and performances, making it a much anticipated and widely participated environmental campaign unlike any other. It soon became a symbol to celebrate the unique environment of the country and mobilize mass support for its preservation.
Last year, more than 123,000 participants joined hands in the massive cleanup operation conducted at 79 sites all over the UAE, including Abu Dhabi. This year, we are aiming for a higher performance in view of the strong support and dedication of corporations, academic institutions, government entities and families.
The campaign will take place over a period of two weeks from 5th December 2016 – 16th December 2016."
