Corporate Responsibility and the Energy Challenge

14th June 2006
Sofitel City Centre
9am – 5pm

Introduction

Energy is the fuel for growth and is central to achieving sustainable development which encompasses social, economy, and environment. Energy utilization and demand is one of the biggest challenges we face in this century, The world's demand for energy continues to rise and experts predict demand in 2030 will be close to 50 percent higher than today.

Energy in the form of oil has played a key role in the development process in UAE which has led to it becoming a trade and tourism hub. Discovery of oil and its benefits has transformed this small country into a flourishing hub that offers high standard and quality of living to its entire people. But rapid increase in population and the surge in demand for residential, industrial and commercial complexes is taking its toll on the country and has resulted

in a major increase in energy consumption, requiring users to
adopt measures to ensure maximum efficiency in the use of energy.
Businesses with their significant operational, technological and financial capacity in energy policy
development and implementation are essential for sustainable delivery and consumption of energy. Businesses are now beginning to
contribute towards the delivery of sustainable energy, though this
contribution still falls short of the challenges at hand.

This workshop will focus on issues such as energy consumption, climate change, global warming and renewable energy.
