Brief:
Food and health are important factors that contribute to Sustainable Development. Going by the adage, "Health is wealth", it is definitely acrucial factor that has an impact on our environment, directly or indirectly.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 73% of adultwomen and 66% of men in the UAE weigh more than recommended by physicians. A survey by the UAE Ministry of Health in 2010 has revealedthat 54.7% of children in UAE of ages 6 -16 years are obese. In 2009, the figure was 26 per cent. Diabetes is on the rise; despite efforts, 1,000 people die every year. About 35 % of the diabetes cases in the UAE remain undiagnosed, which increase the medical costs and complicationsarising out of a largely preventable disease, There is an intrinsic connection between healthy eating and the environment. If a person's diet is healthy, the intake of food will be less, which in turn reduces the demand and thus, results in a lower impact on land. In regions across the world, food wastage is a huge issue. Food is dumped into landfills and this results in the production of greenhouse gases such as methane.
It is also recommended to eat locally produced food as this means lesscarbon dioxide is emitted transporting the food, and if its organic, fewer chemicals are released into the environment. Eating high volumes of redmeat also contributes significantly to many environmental problems such as climate change and the degradation of land and water.
