EEG participates in the United Nations Global Compact, (UNGC) which is recognized as the world's largest voluntary initiative on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability. The Global Compact currently brings together over ten thousand business and non-business participants from more than 140 countries.
Realizing the potential of the Global Compact's ten rallying principles based on Human Rights, Labour, Environment and Anti-Corruption, EEG lend support to the initiative, launched it in the Region and promoted it among the companies it worked with. EEG's Chairperson joined the distinguished international Board of the Global Compact and served two terms. EEG was chosen to be the Focal Point of the Global Compact and subsequently rolled out the Local Network of the UNGC in the Arabian Peninsula. In 2008 EEG signed a Memorandum of Agreement which made the UNGC GCC Network a Formal Network, today it is one of a couple of regional level networks among 101 Local Networks of the Global Compact, almost all of which are country level networks. The GCC Network is open to all Global Compact business and non-business participants in the six GCC countries; - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.
At the inception of the UNGC GCC Network seventeen organizations signed up to the Global Compact and the number grew steadily over the years. At present there are over eighty participants of the Global Compact within the UNGC GCC Network that are using the ten principles as a framework of action for CSR and Sustainability.
At different stages of its operations, the UNGC GCC Network has delivered an array of services to the participants - from mobilization of engagement toward events and initiatives, consultation and collection of inputs, assistance for the submission of the mandatory Communication on Progress (COP) periodic report, developing a dedicated newsletter for knowledge and information, and many more. The UNGC GCC has led and supported various events such as conferences, trainings and workshops to promote the Global Compact.
EEG has embarked on a partnership with the Arabia CSR Network to support the Arabia CSR Awards, which is widely known as a leading knowledge and recognition platform. The award recognizes good practice and showcases the CSR and Sustainability efforts of organizations operating in the Gulf, Levant and North Africa. It has been supported internationally by the Global Compact since its origin, and embeds the UNGC ten principles in the criteria. The two organizations have also collaborated over trainings delivered to build capacity on CSR and GRI (Global Reporting Initiative; - recognized to be the most effective reporting tool on CSR and Sustainability).
